Frances Hesselbein Leadership Conference - Air Force Academy, CO - April 14 - April 20, 2013
Taylan Swift was selected to attend the Spring FHSLP at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
Life at the United States Air Force Academy was challenging and inspiring. In the spring of 2013, I was granted the honor of attending the Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. As a group of 10 students from around the country and the world, we faced tests and challenges throughout the day. And I’m not just talking about the elevation. Every day began with a lesson plan that tied into the days after, and previous. Mixed into rich learning experiences and words to live by, these lesson topics were chosen by the Cadets leading our group, as a powerful summarization of the Leadership Lessons taught by the Academy: condensed from 4 years to a week, and known as Transformational Leadership.
Day one, we focused on Idealized influence, and the true duties of a role model, like leading by example and empowering others. Day Two, we analyzed the benefits of Individualized Consideration, and the skills of communication and feedback, because every person is unique, and being able to utilize those differences and still effectively work together is key. Day three, in Intellectual Stimulation, we were given a complicated task to accomplish within a story, and timed. After failing to even remotely devise a working plan, we learned the 7 steps to the problem solving process the academy recognizes. Step by step, through 1.) identifying the problem, 2.) analyzing it, 3.) identifying the cause, 4.) brainstorming ideas, 5.) selecting the best solution, 6.) implementing it, and 7.) evaluating the outcome, our second trial at another more complicated task proved very effective. Day four, as a group we worked on Inspirational Motivation, to work together and accomplish difficult goals, like getting across the balance/rope course as a team, which proved extremely challenging. On the final day, with what is known as a capstone, we reviewed and tested our learning and experience over the week. Despite blizzard conditions on the last few days and quickly improvised schedules, we excelled as a team and walked away with a firm grasp on the proper workings of effective team work in difficult situations, and in life in general.
A few key points of the Program, to me, were to Lead by Example; Empower your Subordinates; Take charge in your own life; Listen; Lead from the front and don’t push from the rear; Leadership is how to BE, not how to do; To serve is to Live; Ask, don’t Tell; Think first, Speak last; Even when you don’t know it, you have a profound impact on others; Don’t criticize other’s ideas until you’re done brainstorming; Effectively dig down to the root of every problem; Appreciate diversity; “If you’re going to tell people to go stand in the rain, you better be soaking wet yourself”; 100% acceptance; A leader is informal, but not familiar; Character is defined by what you do when no one is looking; and, Show Gratitude! Be grateful for those around you.
Overall, my experience at Hesselbein, was empowering and inspiring. It gave me so much to think about, and so many useful skills that I will be utilizing this year. If you are in S2S™, I encourage you to step up and make a difference; then apply to Frances Hesselbein, because it will change your life. If you’re not in S2S™, consider joining.

Map Project 2013
Recognizing the sacrifices military heroes and their children make, the Student 2 Student® 2012-2013 team started the Map Project at Steilacoom High School. Slips were passed out to Steilacoom students asking if they were military or not, and also where they're from. These slips were organized and put on a map, showing exactly "Where in the World are Sentinels are From?" The team wanted to showcase the service and sacrifice military families make for our country.
The unveiling of the map was on Friday, April 12. The school administration, superintendent, school board, military consultant, S2S™ members, and many more took time out of their day to witness this special unveiling. Thank you to these people for supporting us and being there on the special day!
Special thanks to the people who started it all - thank you to Bekah Greer and Mr. Greer for making the frame case and being a 100% supporter from the beginning. Thank you, of course, to the S2S™ members who helped Bekah organize the project.

Frances Hesselbein Leadership Conference - West Point Military Academy, NY - Oct 29-Nov 3, 2013
Shaina Santonil was selected to attend Frances Hesselbein Leadership Conference at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY on October 29 to November 3.
Hi! It's Shaina! The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Conference was last month but til this day, I still can't stop thinking about it. The experience was once in a lifetime and it was honestly life changing. I was very honored to have been selected with 9 other lucky high school students out of the world's best S2S™ programs to attend an all expense paid conference at West Point. This was my first time traveling alone and it was pretty nerve wracking. On top of that, there was news that the Superstorm Hurricane Sandy would hit the week I attended. When I finally arrived in New Jersey, I met the 9 other students and got to know them really well. Throughout the week, our MCEC® workers took us to presentations led by cadets and made us interact with the cadets on campus. It was unbelievable to learn the everyday life of a military cadet. I was able to experience lunch at the mess hall and was able to walk the crowded hallways of the academy. Other highlights of the trip included fencing with cadets, touring the history of the academy, and spending Halloween carving pumpkins. However, there was one event that stuck out to me and will continue to impact me in my life. We were fortunate enough to talk to Ms. Frances Hesselbein herself on the phone. It was unfortunate we couldn't meet her in person, due to the hurricane. Even if our conversation with her was on the phone, I still hung on to her every word. She is a very inspirational lady and makes me want to improve not only my S2S™ program, but improve myself as a leader in society.
The week, I know, is something I will never forget. I learned valuable lessons to improve myself as a leader and improve the structure of my S2S™ program. Friendships were made, memories were crystallized. 10 strangers at first, but became 10 life friends. I still keep in touch with them and know that we will reconnect in the future. I recommend this experience to anyone in my program; it will teach you something unimaginable and valuable.
"Those of you who will accomplish great things will achieve the elevation of character that constitutes honor...if you do not develop honor, if you do not embrace the finest sense of justice that the human mind can frame, you will not be worthy of the confidence West Point and your country will place in you."

Not only did Steilacoom S2S™ presented a powerpoint about their program, the attending schools also presented powerpoints about their program. The central objective of the whole summit was to brainstorm solutions for problems S2S™ programs have faced.
By the time the summit ended, new friendships were created and valuable ideas were exchanged. The Steilacoom High School S2S™ program thanks those schools for participating in the summit and wishes the best of luck to their programs!
